Livestock farming plays an important role in Burkina Faso's economy, contributing 18% to GDP and 26% to export earnings. The activity is an important source of subsistence for 80% of the Burkinabe population. For this reason, it occupies a prominent place in Burkina Faso's development strategies, notably in the national economic and social development program (PNDES).

However, despite this importance, livestock farming still faces numerous constraints that limit its development. It should also be noted that investment and support for pastoralism have so far been modest. In addition, social peace and the peaceful practice of livestock farming have become increasingly worrying due to insecurity.

It is against this backdrop that the Pastoralism Communication Network (RECOPA), in partnership with Action Against Hunger and the Regional Counsel of Eastern Burkina Faso, are pooling their expertise to provide innovative solutions for the development of livestock farming and the livestock/meat trade for the benefit of livestock farmers, agro-pastoralists, livestock traders, women and young people in Burkina Faso's East region, through the Project to Support the Livestock/Meat Sector in Eastern Burkina Faso (PROSOFIB-EST).

The Project to Support the Livestock/Meat Sector in Eastern Burkina Faso (PROSOFIB-EST) aims to improve the business climate in the livestock and livestock/meat sector in the Eastern region of Burkina Faso, and will contribute to an increase in productivity, added value and agricultural income, with a view to contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction through :

  • Pastoralists' and agropastoralists' access to pastoral resources and markets
  • Capacity-building for key transboundry players in the sector
  • Improving the living conditions of agro-pastoral populations by supplying and access to crossborder veterinary posts
  • Forage production and conservation
  • Economic empowerment of women and young people
  • Capacity-building for players in the sector

The project's intervention strategy will be based on "getting things done", which will create a favorable environment for the industry's development, and above all a world of professionals capable of offering competitive products on the market.

To contribute to the development of competitive and inclusive livestock-meat value chains to create income opportunities for pastoral and agro-pastoral households in the eastern region of Burkina-Faso
