The FAO estimates that 51.4% of farming households in Togo raise goats. This activity provides them with very low incomes and does not meet the national demand for meat; this situation is mainly due to the low productivity of small ruminant herds, the poor structuring of players, limited access to market information, and the health risks present in the meat supply chain. This is the background to the DEFI - Meat project.

The DEFI - Meat project aims to improve the productivity of small ruminant family farms, which will reduce disease and mortality, and improve farming conditions.

The project will also support the structuring of professional organizations in the livestock and meat sector; improve the trade of animals from family farms by engaging agro-breeders' organizations in animal marketing contracts with ESOP Meat, and professionalize livestock and meat sector players through training, certification and access to microcredit for equipment.

To improve the incomes of players in the small ruminant livestock and meat sector by more than 10% through social entrepreneurship.
