Togo: FSRP supports the training of 3000 farmers in the Southern part of the country to adopt agroecological practices

In the maritime, Eastern plateau and Western plateau regions of Togo, agriculture plays a key role in the activities of the population in an area that has been deteriorating over the years with the disappearance of plant cover. To strengthen the resilience of farmers in these regions, the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme in Togo supports the adoption of agro-ecological practices to achieve food and nutritional security, fight poverty and create jobs in rural areas through the sustainable use of developed areas.

Thus, a specific training of 3000 farmers operating in the Zones d'Aménagement Agricole Planifiées (ZAAP) in southern Togo through the agroecological farm schools has been initiated. In partnership with the Togolese Coordination of Farmers' and Agricultural Producers' Organisations (CTOP), this training is being carried out in several stages, the first of which consisted of training 300 relay farmers identified in 60 ZAAPs, who will in turn be responsible for relaying and training farmers in their respective ZAAPs on the agroecological practices learned.

This training aims to strengthen the sustainability of the production systems practiced in the ZAAPs and the resilience of the beneficiary households.

In addition, it should be noted that the Planned Agricultural Development Areas (PADAs) constitute production blocks of at least 100 ha of monoculture on which producers are concentrated for supervised production. They ensure a large quantity of production and guarantee a regular supply of raw material for processing units.

he support to sites has made it possible to profile the ZAAP strategy based on the principles of the government's "Togo 2025 strategic vision", the objectives of which are: (i) to improve agricultural productivity and yields, (ii) to ensure food security in Togo, (iii) to strengthen agri-food processing industries and encourage high value-added agriculture, and (iv) to improve access to financing and access to markets for farmers
