The center was set up in 2002 with the support of the "Integrated Employment and Vocational Training Project" (PIEFP-CV) project, with funding from Portugal's IEFP. The Cape Verdean government's vision is to transform the Santiago region into a special economic zone (SEZ) focused on agribusiness, based on a value chain strengthening rationale, in a fruitful partnership with the region's municipalities and donors. This will require a skilled workforce, particularly in fields such as agroecology, agro-industry, renewable energies for rural areas, etc. The Center's mission is to improve the quality of the workforce in the municipalities of Santa Cruz and São Miguel, mainly in the agricultural and fishing sectors.
This project to integrate agroecology training into CFPSCz courses is in line with the strategic plan of Cape Verde's Institute for Employment and Vocational Training, given that agro-ecology is a systemic approach to productive agriculture that integrates crops, livestock and trees. CEFPSCz has promoted certain agroecological practices in some of the training courses it offers, but not enough. The project will help to meet these needs in terms of human resources skills enhancement, infrastructure development and the acquisition of equipment and teaching materials.
The implementation of the project will not only enable the development of activities linked to agroecological practices to be strengthened in the CEFPSCz, but also the setting up of other training and educational production units. This will involve the acquisition of teaching equipment for the practice and implementation of a composting area and an agroecological demonstration site, on the one hand, and the strengthening of trainers' operational capacities, on the other.
The project will also enable the creation of certain training units linked to agroecological production systems. In addition, the project will promote the application of agroecological practices in the municipalities of Santa Cruz and São Miguel. In this way, at least 60 young people will be trained in agroecology in initial training at the center, and 80 young agro-entrepreneurs will be trained in the field.
General objective: To contribute to improving the agroecology training courses at CEFP Santa Cruz
Specific objectives
Among other things, the project will mobilize and manage resources, coordinate and plan training activities for managers, trainers and producers, purchase materials and equipment, manage teaching sites, monitor and support learners, capitalize on results (reports), and so on. In addition, a monitoring team will carry out periodic advisory support missions to ensure the quality of training module implementation.
As far as post-training follow-up is concerned, the beneficiaries of this project's actions will be systematically taken into account by the employment services, where they will be accompanied and supported. The database will be updated to take account of the specific content of the agroecology training.
