KITA is located in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The surrounding communities are steadily becoming peri-urban. Families in the surrounding area gradually become low- or upper-middle-income families, and meat and fish consumption increases. Poultry and fish farmers were born. Their main challenge was the cost of feed, since most farmers have to spend an average of 76% of their income on food. This calls for an integrated farming system that uses poultry and fish waste in a closed-loop system that can be replicated in all regions.

Ghana currently produces 60,000 Mt of poultry and imports over 400,000 Mt annually. This franchising model proposed by the center, which also reduces chicken production time from 2 to 4 weeks, will ensure meat availability and serve as a substitute for imports. The model proposed in this agroecological farming project should therefore be viable in the short and medium term, and follow natural principles to create income. The model will therefore facilitate replication and the targeting of specific markets.

This project aims to set up an integrated production model that includes livestock (especially poultry and fish).

The main actions of this project are

  • the development of staff capacity to build, manage and deliver training in this integrated model
  • the establishment and operation of one or two cycles of the integrated model
  • the development of an integrated curriculum to train potential and active farmers in the integrated model (and make a year-round agroecological course covering all aspects of agroecology permanently available)
  • training 10 existing and 30 potential farmers in the model.

The construction of the models will serve as practical skills development for the trainers. Finally, the training courses for farmers will be amended by the stakeholders to improve the model and the content of the program/training and also to strengthen the capacity of staff to use the program. The training of 30 future farmers will serve to create jobs and disseminate agroecological technology.

General objective: The aim of the project is to provide an integrated poultry and fisheries system, with no environmental footprint, for job creation, nutritional improvement and gender transformational change.

Specific objectives

icon01.
To improve infrastructure at the KITA center
icon02.
To reinforce the KITA center's teaching equipment and materials
icon03.
To improve the quality of training and the annual number of agroecology trainees
icon04.
To strengthen the capabilities of the center's human resources

The integrated model will be available on site to provide learners with ongoing training in agroecological systems. The modules will be a short course, according to the wishes of the young people, which can be replicated by other establishments. Poultry and fish farming will be part of the curriculum for training years 1, 2 and 3 at the institute. The availability of this model will provide practical, skills-based training opportunities for potential and active farmers. The training model will integrate ecological (agroecological) skills in poultry/pisciculture, with commercial franchise management, good environmental governance. This short, intensive course model will be available to all learners, farmers and the general public via YouTube videos. Technical and pedagogical training for trainers will also be provided.
