In view of the ongoing food crisis and the crucial importance of the implementation of the Regional Food Security Reserve (RFSR) desired and decided by the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government and following the Experts’ meeting held on 4 through 5 June 2018, the ECOWAS Commission brought together the Ministers of Agricultural in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 6 June 2018 to discuss a boiling issue in the region and make the appropriate recommendations. The Ministers discussed and outlined proposals for responses to face the food and nutrition crises that have become recurrent in the ECOWAS region and in the Sahel.
This high-level meeting focused on the review and adoption of the operating modalities and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve and the Food and Nutrition Crisis in the Sahel and West Africa. The Ministers reviewed and validated among others, (i) the establishment of the governance bodies (Management Committee and Steering Committee), (ii) the technical regulation on the operationalization of the Regional Reserve and (iii) the urgent measures in response to the ongoing food and nutrition crisis in the region.
These measures will be submitted to the ECOWAS Council of Statutory Ministers for adoption.
