Niger has a dynamic dairy processing sector due to strong local consumption. However, the development of the local milk chain is hampered by several factors, notably the seasonality of milk production and the fact that most of this production does not reach the market, due to the long distances between production sites and urban markets, as well as the logistical challenges involved in milk collection. We therefore need to promote innovations (diversification of the range of dairy products and the provision of services based on digital tools) that will enable us to capitalize on the potential of several important segments of the industry (production, collection and processing).
This project, supported by the "AREN" association, aims to support the modernization of the Hamdallaye and Say milk collection units, by securing their milk supply, developing marketing and conquering larger, more stable outlets, with the knock-on effect of creating jobs for young people at several levels of the value chain (livestock feed, milk collection, sale of dairy products and provision of services). The action levers to be used focus on requirements aimed at:
- To improve supplies to milk collection centers, by supporting the structuring and professionalization of raw milk collection
- To develop partnerships between collection centers, decentralized technical services (in charge of livestock, extension, agricultural and rural advisory services) and local authorities in the Say and Kollo departments, with a view to promoting synergies and local monitoring of activities
- To support the negotiation of business contracts between forage producers and dairy farmers, and provide support to stakeholders to ensure that contractual provisions are implemented and respected
- To develop a marketing strategy based on contractual agreements with the private sector (shopping centers, hotels, company restaurants, school canteens, etc.), with a view to promoting the consumption of products made exclusively from local milk
- To strengthen and diversify the distribution system for dairy products, through online sales and the setting up of kiosks dedicated to dairy products, with a view to promoting consumption of these products
To promote the improvement of local milk collection, processing and marketing systems, in order to increase the productivity and competitiveness of the sector in Niger.
